In general a monogram is a design made up of two or more initials, typically used to identify a person or an organization. In the case of Louis Vuitton, the monogram refers to the iconic LV pattern that features the letters L and V interlocking with floral motifs. The LV monogram has become a signature of the brand, and is instantly recognizable to fashion connoisseurs around the world.

The LV monogram was first introduced in 1896 by Louis Vuitton's son, Georges Vuitton, as a way to deter counterfeiting and protect the brand's identity. There are various legends around what inspired the design. The one that we like is that the pattern was inspired by the Japanese and Oriental designs that were popular at the time, and was intended to be both stylish and functional. Over the years, the LV monogram has evolved and been reimagined in different colors, sizes, and materials, but the core design has remained the same, a testament to its enduring appeal and timelessness.

In the 1990s, Dapper Dan, a Harlem-based designer, began creating knockoffs of Louis Vuitton's monogram products, which introduced the LV monogram to a new demographic of shoppers.

In 1997, Louis Vuitton hired Marc Jacobs as its creative director. Jacobs breathed new life into the LV monogram, making it popular among his model friends, including Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss. In 2003, Jacobs collaborated with Japanese artist Takashi Murakami to create a new monogram that featured white monograms with multicolored logos and characters.
